Car Loan Cancellations Surge Ahead of GST Cut on Small Cars

Indian banks are seeing a wave of car loan cancellations as customers delay purchases ahead of the September 22 GST cut, which will reduce taxes on cars up to 1,200 cc from 28% to 18%. Many buyers find the potential savings greater than loan cancellation fees, prompting them to wait. In response, some banks are waiving processing fees and revising strategies to retain customers. The new GST structure also eliminates the compensation cess, simplifying taxation and lowering prices for nearly 400 auto products. Consumers are adjusting their choices—some upgrading to 1,300 cc models to benefit from lower tax brackets—while dealers face pressure to time invoices before the change takes effect. The shift highlights how tax policy can reshape consumer behavior and disrupt financial flows, with an estimated ₹2,500 crore in unclaimed cess set to lapse. As the deadline nears, automakers, lenders, and buyers are recalibrating plans to adapt to the new tax landscape.
