CCI Seeks More Details in Anti-Competitive Probe Against Blinkit, Instamart, and Zepto
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has sought additional information from the petitioner in an ongoing review of allegations against quick commerce platforms Blinkit, Instamart, and Zepto for potential anti-competitive practices. The move comes as part of the initial scrutiny of a complaint filed in March by the All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation, representing FMCG distributors.
The CCI has asked for further evidence on claims of market dominance, deep discounting, and unfair pricing and operational practices that may violate the Competition Act, 2002. Specifically, the petition alleges that these platforms use aggressive discounting and direct procurement models to undercut traditional distributors, distorting fair competition.
While no formal investigation has been launched yet, the Commission may proceed to inspect company records after evaluating the petitioner’s supplementary submissions. The case remains in the preliminary stage, where the CCI assesses whether there is a prima facie case for a full probe by the Director General.
If admitted, this could become a high-profile antitrust inquiry, joining other CCI actions against digital platforms. The outcome may have significant implications for the rapidly growing quick commerce sector and the balance between innovation and fair market practices.
