CEA Warns of Grid Strain and Rising Costs Amid Renewable Surge; Calls for Better Planning and BESS Integration

India’s rapid renewable energy expansion—now accounting for 50% of installed power capacity with over 40 GW expected this year alone—is outpacing demand and straining grid operations, warned Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). Speaking at a TERI event, he highlighted a growing mismatch between renewable capacity addition and transmission infrastructure, leading to skyrocketing transmission charges and uncertainty in grid absorption. Much of India’s transmission planning is based on potential renewable generation rather than actual demand or evacuation readiness, delaying Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and risking stranded assets. Without adequate demand, surplus power will be difficult to manage, threatening financial viability for developers. To address this, the CEA will revise transmission plans every six months and improve weather forecasting for solar and wind output. Prasad stressed the need for holistic, integrated planning across generation, transmission, and distribution, urging states to align resource adequacy with future load requirements. He emphasized that coal, hydro, nuclear, and gas must continue to be invested in alongside renewables to ensure grid stability and reliability. Industry experts point to slow transmission corridor commissioning, network access bottlenecks, and supply chain issues as key hurdles. Moreover, rising equipment costs and capital expenses are impacting project execution. Crucially, the integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) has emerged as essential to balance intermittent renewable supply, shift peak generation to high-demand periods, and enhance grid resilience. As India races toward its 500 GW renewable target by 2030, scalable and cost-competitive BESS infrastructure will be vital—not just for integration, but for ensuring reliable, round-the-clock clean power and safeguarding the economics of the energy transition.
