DCM Shriram commissions ₹310 crore Bharuch chemical plant

DCM Shriram commissioned a 100 TPD Aluminium Chloride and 133 TPD Calcium Chloride plant at Bharuch on September 30, 2026. This ₹310 crore forward integration project converts captive chlorine into high-margin specialty chemicals. The new facilities absorb chlorine byproducts from Chlor-Alkali operations, marking the company's first foray into calcium chloride. This matters as it insulates the business from caustic soda price volatility, complementing a Q1 FY27 where revenue grew 9% YoY to ₹3,564 crore and PBDIT rose 12% to ₹364 crore. I am watching the Q3 FY27 earnings call for initial capacity utilization rates and sequential margin expansion in the specialty chemicals segment. The market prices DCM Shriram as a traditional agro-chemical player exposed to cyclical chlor-alkali swings. What the consensus misses is the structural margin defense this integration provides. Converting a volatile byproduct (chlorine) into high-demand, import-substitution specialty chemicals fundamentally alters unit economics. The ₹310 crore capex is already sunk; the upcoming volume ramp-up will drop largely to the bottom line with minimal incremental fixed costs. The market is ignoring this operating leverage, pricing the stock on legacy commodity cycles rather than its emerging specialty chemical annuity. Accumulate for long-term specialty margin re-rating. Disclosure: I do not hold positions in this stock. This is for educational purposes only and does not constitute investment advice.
