HAL to Manufacture Russian SJ-100 Aircraft in India

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has signed a MoU with Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation to locally manufacture the SJ-100, a twin-engine, narrow-body civil commuter aircraft. This marks the first time a complete passenger aircraft will be built in India since the AVRO HS748 production ended in 1988. Under the deal, HAL will produce the SJ-100 for domestic use, supporting regional connectivity under the UDAN scheme. The SJ-100, already operated by 16 airlines globally, is ideal for short-haul routes and can meet India’s projected demand for over 200 regional jets in the next decade. The move is a major step toward ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ in civil aviation, reducing import dependence and boosting indigenous manufacturing. It is expected to enhance private sector participation and generate significant direct and indirect employment. With Indian carriers like IndiGo and Air India planning large fleet expansions, the SJ-100 project positions HAL at the forefront of India’s growing regional air mobility ecosystem.
