Hindustan Zinc: Strong Results, Stagnant Growth

Hindustan Zinc, India’s largest integrated zinc producer and a key player in the global silver market, has delivered robust operational results despite broader economic uncertainties. In FY25, the company reported a net profit of ₹10,436 crore, with operating margins exceeding 50% and cost of production among the lowest globally—$1,052 per tonne in FY25 and a near-record $994 per tonne in Q4. Silver prices are surging, and demand for zinc remains strong due to infrastructure, solar energy, and EV growth. However, the company’s stock has remained largely flat, reflecting investor concerns over capital allocation and governance. Despite record profits, Hindustan Zinc paid out dividends worth ₹12,000 crore in FY25—financed partly through borrowings—leaving it with net debt of over ₹6,000 crore by year-end. This has raised questions about whether the company is prioritizing shareholder returns over long-term growth. In June 2025, the company approved a ₹12,000 crore expansion plan aimed at doubling capacity by 2030. While this signals strategic intent, funding the project will be challenging without reinvesting more of its cash flows. With management relying on a mix of internal accruals and debt, there are concerns that ongoing dividend payouts could hinder investment momentum. Further clouding the narrative are governance issues, including allegations of brand-fee arrangements with parent Vedanta and past blocked asset transfers. These have eroded trust and highlighted misalignment between promoter interests and shareholders. Despite these challenges, the core business remains strong. High EBITDA margins, expanding volumes, and plans for green zinc and advanced silver recovery show promise. With stable commodity prices and a growing role in India’s energy transition, Hindustan Zinc has the potential to become a global mining leader—if it can shift focus from short-term payouts to sustainable, value-driven growth.
