IndiGo Faces 10% Route Curtailment, Rating Watch Amid Operational Crisis
IndiGo, operated by InterGlobe Aviation, has been ordered by the Aviation Ministry to curtail its route network by 10%—a steep escalation from the earlier 5% directive—following weeks of widespread flight cancellations. The move aims to stabilize operations and reduce disruptions, though the airline will continue serving all destinations.
The crisis stems from operational challenges linked to the rollout of Phase II of Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) norms, compounded by technical glitches, air traffic congestion, and winter weather. The DGCA responded with temporary FDTL relaxations and issued show cause notices to senior executives.
Regulatory scrutiny has intensified, with CRISIL placing IndiGo’s ₹9,000 crore bank facilities on ‘Rating Watch – Developing Implications’ and Moody’s flagging credit-negative risks due to poor preparedness for regulatory changes.
Despite this, IndiGo reported strong FY25 financials: revenue up 18.1% to ₹84,098 crore and EBITDA growth of 14.5%, though net profit dipped 11.2% to ₹7,258 crore. It remains well-lit with ₹38,517 crore in cash as of September 2025.
The coming months will test the airline’s ability to restore reliability, manage regulatory fallout, and protect profitability while maintaining its leadership in India’s competitive aviation market.
Our expectation is Indigo will post a loss of ₹700-1200 Cr this quarter due to these disruptions and the aftermath.
