IndiGo to Surrender Unused Airport Slots After DGCA-Ordered Schedule Cut
Interglobe Aviation (IndiGo), India’s largest airline, has announced it will surrender unused airport slots as part of a broader operational restructuring following severe disruptions in December 2025 that affected over 300,000 passengers and led to more than 4,500 flight cancellations.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) mandated a 10% reduction in IndiGo’s flight schedule and identified systemic failures, including over-optimised operations, software deficiencies, and poor implementation of Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL). A key outcome was the removal of SVP Operations Control Centre Jason Herter from his role.
CEO Pieter Elbers confirmed that the airline is handing back unutilized slots, acknowledging airlines’ responsibility to return idle capacity. He emphasized stability for the next two months and assured no flight cancellations beyond February 10, when temporary FDTL exemptions end.
With around 2,400 Airbus captains—above required levels—IndiGo asserts it has adequate manpower. The airline is conducting an internal review of processes and working with regulators to restore operational reliability.
The slot surrender marks a strategic course correction, reflecting IndiGo’s commitment to regulatory compliance, operational discipline, and rebuilding passenger trust after its worst service crisis to date.
