Indonesia’s Coal Export Pause and Its Ripple Effect on India

Indonesian coal miners have suspended spot exports following government proposals for deep production cuts. As one of the world’s top thermal coal exporters, this move tightens global supply and could disrupt Indian industries reliant on imported coal. Coal India, though dominant domestically, doesn’t fully meet quality or volume needs of power and steel sectors. Many private thermal plants use low-ash Indonesian coal for efficient generation. A supply pause may force them to switch to costlier alternatives from Russia or South Africa, raising fuel costs. Steel producers — especially sponge iron units — also depend on imported non-coking coal. Disruptions could increase input costs, squeezing margins amid weak prices. While Coal India may see higher domestic demand, the broader impact includes elevated import bills and energy insecurity. The halt highlights India’s vulnerability to global supply shocks and underscores the need for diversified sourcing and faster domestic mining reforms.
