NALCO advances 30,000 crore smelter expansion

NALCO is advancing its ₹30,000 crore brownfield smelter expansion at Anugola, Odisha. This project will double its smelting capacity by 0.5 million tonnes per annum to nearly 1.0 MTPA. The expansion is backed by a technology licensing agreement with Emirates Global Aluminium and a 50:50 joint venture with NLC India for a 1,080 MW captive power plant. This matters because it vertically integrates power security with capacity doubling, leveraging surplus alumina from the ongoing 5th Stream Refinery. I am watching the Q3 FY27 earnings call in January 2027 for updates on land acquisition progress via the RPDAC and the finalized renewable energy integration mix for the captive plant. The market currently prices NALCO purely as a cyclical commodity player, fixated on London Metal Exchange aluminum price volatility. What the consensus misses is the structural cost-defense this specific expansion provides. Step one: partnering with EGA for proprietary smelting technology ensures world-class energy efficiency, mechanically lowering per-tonne production costs. Step two: the captive power joint venture eliminates grid dependency and shields the project from industrial tariff hikes. Step three: converting surplus alumina into finished aluminum domestically captures the entire value chain margin, bypassing raw material export limitations. The market misprices this as distant capital expenditure, ignoring the long-term return on capital employed uplift from complete vertical integration. Accumulate for long-term vertical integration and margin defense. Disclosure: I do not hold positions in this stock. This is for educational purposes only and does not constitute investment advice.
