Tata Steel Faces ₹1,755 Crore Penalty Over Alleged Excess Coal Mining
Tata Steel has received a notice from the District Mining Office, Ramgarh (Jharkhand), demanding ₹1,755 crore for alleged excessive coal mining at its West Bokaro Colliery. The charge pertains to the extraction of 16.2 million metric tonnes of coal beyond permissible limits between FY2000–01 and FY2006–07.
The demand is based on the Supreme Court’s 2017 ruling in Common Cause vs. Union of India, which mandated that any mining exceeding approved plans — even within leased areas — constitutes illegal mining, requiring payment of full value for excess minerals extracted.
Tata Steel has rejected the penalty as unjustified and announced plans to challenge it through legal channels. “The management believes the demand lacks justification… and will pursue suitable legal remedies,” the company said in an exchange filing.
While the matter is likely to be protracted, it highlights ongoing regulatory scrutiny of historical mining practices. For now, Tata Steel remains confident of defending its position before judicial or quasi-judicial forums.
