Tata Steel's Legal and Regulatory Challenges

Tata Steel Ltd. is facing two significant regulatory demands, totaling over ₹2,793 crore. First, the Jajpur Deputy Director of Mines has issued a demand letter for ₹1,903 crore, citing a shortfall in mineral dispatch from the Sukinda Chromite block under the Mine Development and Production Agreement. The state alleges a violation of concession rules and seeks recovery through appropriation of performance security. Tata Steel disputes the claim, stating it lacks legal basis and plans to challenge it in court. In addition, the company received a show-cause notice from the Jamshedpur CGST & Excise Commissioner regarding an alleged ₹890.5 crore irregularity in input tax credit (ITC) availed between FY 2018–19 and FY 2020–21. The firm must respond within 30 days. These developments highlight regulatory scrutiny impacting one of India’s largest steel producers as it navigates compliance and legal challenges.
