Telangana Govt to Acquire L&T’s Stake in Hyderabad Metro for ₹2,000 Crore
In a major development for urban mobility, the Telangana government has announced the acquisition of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Group’s 90% stake in the Hyderabad Metro Rail project for ₹2,000 crore, along with taking over ₹13,000 crore in project debt.
The deal marks a strategic shift in ownership, allowing the state to assume full control of India’s one of the largest metro projects. L&T had sought to exit due to sustained operational losses in the 70-km network.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and L&T CMD S.N. Subrahmanyan finalized the agreement, paving the way for faster approvals for Phase 2 and integrated urban transport planning.
While the move strengthens public oversight and long-term development prospects, it also places a significant financial burden on the state. The transition will be closely watched for its impact on service quality, expansion plans, and fiscal sustainability.
