Zomato Launches NPS Initiative for Gig Workers in Partnership with HDFC Pension

Zomato has partnered with HDFC Pension to launch the 'NPS Platform Workers Model', a first-of-its-kind retirement savings initiative for gig workers, launched on October 1. The scheme, supported by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, aims to bring financial security to India’s growing gig workforce. Within just 72 hours, over 30,000 delivery partners enrolled and generated their Permanent Retirement Account Numbers (PRAN)—a strong early response highlighting the unmet need for formal retirement planning. The model features small, periodic contributions, portability across platforms, and a digital KYC-based onboarding process, making it accessible and hassle-free. Zomato aims to enroll over 1 lakh delivery partners by end-2025. With India’s gig economy projected to reach 23.5 million workers by FY30, this initiative marks a significant step toward social security in informal employment. It complements Zomato’s existing benefits like health insurance and accident cover for its ~5.09 lakh monthly active delivery partners. This collaboration sets a benchmark for the industry, potentially paving the way for similar programs across platforms, and redefining financial inclusion in the gig economy.
