BSE Is Replacing Wipro in the Nifty 50. Here's Why Passive Funds Will Now Be Forced to Buy and Sell.

NSE Indices officially announced today that

BSE
Ltd will replace Wipro in the Nifty 50, effective after market close on September 29, 2026. BSE's six-month average free-float market cap stood at ₹1,40,879 crore, compared to Wipro's ₹55,930 crore, more than 2.5 times higher, comfortably clearing the required threshold. Here's why an index reshuffle like this actually moves stock prices, beyond just being a symbolic change. A massive amount of money in India sits in passive funds, index funds and ETFs that mechanically hold whatever's in the Nifty 50, in the same proportion as the index itself. When a stock gets added, every single one of these funds is essentially required to buy it, and every fund holding the outgoing stock is required to sell it, regardless of whether they personally think it's a good or bad investment. This creates genuinely predictable buying and selling pressure around the effective date, purely mechanical, not based on anyone's view of the company's future. Estimates suggest BSE could see meaningful passive inflows once index funds rebalance, while WIPRO faces passive outflows as those same funds trim their holdings to match the new index composition. Worth being precise about something important here though. Index inclusion or exclusion is not a comment on a company's actual business quality or future prospects. Wipro isn't being removed because analysts think it's a bad company, it's being removed because its market cap fell relative to BSE's, purely a sizing threshold being crossed. Wipro moves into the Nifty Next 50 instead, not off the market entirely. The takeaway: Index reshuffles create real, predictable price pressure through mechanical fund flows, separate entirely from a company's actual fundamentals. Worth understanding this distinction before reading too much into any stock's move around an index rejig date, the buying or selling might just be funds matching a formula, not a verdict on the business itself.
