reported Q1 FY27 net profit of ₹639 crore, down 12% year-on-year from ₹731 crore. Sounds like a weak quarter. But sequentially, comparing to the previous quarter, profit actually doubled, up from ₹318.20 crore in Q4 FY26. Same result, two completely different stories depending on which comparison you use.
The YoY decline came from rising electrical energy costs pushing up overall expenses, even as revenue grew a modest 3% to ₹8,124 crore. That's a genuine cost pressure story, not an accounting quirk.
But the sequential doubling matters too, since it shows the business recovering meaningfully from what was likely a weaker prior quarter, rather than deteriorating further. Power and utility companies often see seasonal swings quarter to quarter, tied to demand patterns and energy procurement costs, so a single YoY comparison can miss real within-year momentum.
The takeaway. Whenever you see conflicting YoY and QoQ numbers for the same result, both are telling you something real. YoY shows the longer trend, QoQ shows the immediate trajectory.
