BEML wins a ₹5,400 crore order, but valuation matters

BEML
BEML Limited (BEML) has secured an order worth more than ₹5,400 crore from National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited to supply and maintain high-speed trains for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor. The contract is larger than BEML's FY26 revenue of ₹4,350.5 crore. It also adds to an order book that stood at ₹16,285 crore at the end of June 2026. The scale is impressive. But the order value is not immediate revenue, and it does not tell us how much profit the contract will generate. BEML's FY26 operating margin fell to around 7% from 13% a year earlier. Its June 2026 quarter also ended with a consolidated net loss of ₹27 crore despite revenue growth of 29%. Cash conversion is another concern. Customer payments took an average of 191 days in FY26, while free cash flow was negative at ₹250 crore. My view is that BEML has a strong opportunity to grow its rail business, but execution will decide whether the order creates value. The stock was trading at around 92 times earnings in mid-October, well above the reported industry median of 30 times. At that valuation, investors need more than a large order book. They need profitable execution and better cash generation. The next trigger is the next quarterly result. I want to see margin recovery, lower receivable days and progress on the high-speed train contract. My stance: The order improves revenue visibility, but I would wait for stronger profitability and cash flow before becoming more positive.
