INDIA'S RETAIL SECTOR GAINS MOMENTUM AS MAY'25 SALES GROW BY 7% YoY

In it's latest report, the Retailers Association of India (RAI), has revealed that the retail sector has gained strong momentum. In fact the pan-India retail sales growth in May 2025 was recorded at 7% higher than the corresponding period in the previous year. Region-wise, south India recorded the highest year-on-year growth at 9%, whereas West India recorded a 7% growth, followed by North and East India showing a growth of 6% and 4% respectively. It has been observed that after several months of moderate growth of about 4-5%, the retail businesses are beginning to show signs of accelerated growth with sales in May 2025 growing 7% compared to the same period last year. Among categories, the Quick Service Restaurants (QSR) led with 10% growth, while Consumer Durables and Electronics (CDIT) and Furniture grew by 8% each. This uptick suggests improving consumer sentiment, particularly in discretionary categories. The outlook for the upcoming festive season appears optimistic.
