KALYANKJIL
Kalyan Jewellers shares fell nearly 3% to Rs 553.50 on Thursday, giving back some of this week's gains after the stock had jumped on a healthy September quarter business update earlier in the week, part of a broader market pullback following the RBI's rate hike.
The Run Up To This: This stock has been one of the market's more dramatic movers all year. After a strong June quarter, consolidated revenue up 38% year on year and India same store sales growth of 28%, with showroom count expanding to 524 across India, the Middle East, US, UK and the Candere format, Citi turned bullish with a target of Rs 750, arguing the growth story had meaningfully more room to run. The stock rallied roughly 50% over a handful of sessions earlier this year on that call. The September quarter update that triggered this week's gains continued that same theme of expansion led growth, before today's broader market weakness pulled the stock back.
Why the Swings Keep Happening: Jewellery retailers like Kalyan are judged heavily on same store sales growth and showroom expansion pace rather than headline revenue alone, since that signals whether demand is organic or just new store openings. Strong same store numbers tend to trigger sharp rallies, while even mild profit booking after a big run can knock the stock down hard, exactly the volatility this counter has shown all year.
