Bangladesh Pays $384 Million to Adani – Relief for Adani Power & India’s Energy Diplomacy

Adani Power has received $384 million from Bangladesh in June 2025, helping recover a major chunk of unpaid power bills under a 25-year power supply deal signed in 2017. Background: • Adani Power’s Godda plant in Jharkhand supplies 100% of its electricity (around 1,600 MW) to Bangladesh. • Due to rising import costs, dollar shortages, and political turmoil, Bangladesh defaulted on payments in 2024. • Adani halved power supply in Nov 2024, restoring full supply only in March 2025 after part payments resumed. Latest Update: • Bangladesh paid $384M out of $437M committed for June. • This clears “admitted” dues till March 2025. • Total cleared so far: ~$1.5B out of $2B billed. • Remaining “claimed” dues: ~$500M • Adani has waived $20M in late fees, conditional on timely payments. Issues Still Being Negotiated: • Coal cost calculations • Plant capacity disputes • Difference between “claimed” vs “admitted” dues Political Shift in Bangladesh: • The deal is under review by a high-level committee after former PM Sheikh Hasina’s exit. • Interim PM Muhammad Yunus raised concerns about the transparency of past agreements with Indian firms. Impact on Adani & India: ✅ Adani Power gets major relief with improved cash flow and lower receivables. ✅ Helps stabilize operations at Godda plant and reassures lenders. ✅ Boosts India’s image as a trusted regional energy partner. ⚠️ But scrutiny of such international deals may rise, especially with political regime changes. Bottom Line: The payment is a positive for Adani Power and India’s power diplomacy, but it also highlights the risks tied to overseas deals in politically unstable economies.
