Defence Stocks Rise as Global Tensions Escalate.
Today defence-related stocks in India continued their upward momentum for the second day in a row, even as the overall market was falling. The Nifty India Defence index rose 1.6% to around 8,833, while major indices like Sensex and Nifty were down about 0.4%. Top Gainers in Defence Stocks: • Cochin Shipyard: +6.39% (₹2,050) • GRSE & BEML: +5.5% • Astra Microwave, Solar Industries, Midhani, DCX India, Mazagon Dock: +2%+ • Paras Defence, Zen Tech: +1.7% • BDL, BEL, Data Patterns: Small gains • HAL: Slightly in the red Why the sudden interest in defence stocks? Because of rising global tensions: 1. Russia-Ukraine War: - Ukraine hit Russia, destroying over 40 Russian warplanes. - Russia launched its largest drone attack ever on Ukraine (472 drones). - Peace talks now seem uncertain. 2. Iran-US Nuclear Tensions: - Iran has increased its uranium enrichment, close to weapons-grade levels. - The US has proposed a new nuclear deal, but Iran hasn’t accepted yet. These events raise fears of more conflict globally, leading investors to bet on defence companies, expecting higher government defence spending ahead. When uncertainty rises, defence stocks often act as a “safe zone” for investors.
