DIIs Surpass FIIs, Marking Structural Shift in Nifty50

Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) have overtaken Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) in Nifty50 ownership for the first time, marking a structural shift in India’s equity market. As of the December 2025 quarter, DIIs held ~24.8% of the Nifty50, marginally higher than FIIs at ~24.3%, an eight-quarter low, as per data from Motilal Oswal Securities. This is the first instance of DIIs leading ownership within the benchmark index. The shift has been supported by strong SIP inflows of ~₹3.34 lakh crore in CY2025, rising pension and insurance fund participation, and a deepening domestic institutional ecosystem. Over the past five years, despite ~₹9.96 lakh crore of cumulative FII selling, domestic flows have enabled the Nifty to deliver ~72–75% absolute returns. FIIs have been reducing exposure due to a weakening rupee, global risk aversion, and more attractive yields in overseas markets, while DIIs have increased stakes across a majority of Nifty50 constituents, providing stability and downside support to the Indian equity market.
