Manappuram Finance Q4 Results: Big Loss, But Dividend Announced.

What happened? Manappuram Finance, a company known for giving loans against gold, reported a big loss of ₹191 crore in the January–March 2025 quarter. This is surprising because last year, during the same time, they made a profit of ₹562 crore. Why the loss? The main reason is their microfinance unit (small loans given to people, usually in rural areas). - Bad loans (where people didn’t repay) jumped over 5 times, reaching ₹849 crore! - Because of this, the company had to keep ₹919 crore aside as "provisions" (a safety fund to cover these losses). Gold loan business still strong - Their gold loan business did well – up 14% to ₹1,850 crore, helped by high gold prices. - Gold loans are safer for the company because the gold acts as security. - This gold loan segment brings in 75% of their total income. - Other key numbers: - Total Assets Under Management (AUM): ₹43,034 crore (up 2.3%) - Net Interest Income: ₹1,464 crore (down 6.7%) What about the stock? - Even with the loss, the stock closed slightly higher at ₹228.70 on May 9. Dividend news: - The company also announced an interim dividend of ₹0.50 per share. - To get this dividend, you must own the shares by May 15 (record date). In summery, while Manappuram faced big losses due to unpaid micro-loans, its gold loan business stayed strong. Investors will still get a small dividend despite the tough quarter.
