Most retail portfolios don’t underperform because of bad stock selection. They underperform because of imbalance. If 60–70% of your capital sits in one theme — say financials or midcaps — you’re not investing. You’re making a macro bet without realising it. A resilient portfolio is layered. Core: stable large caps with earnings visibility. Satellite: growth names that can compound faster but carry volatility. Tactical: limited exposure to cyclical or theme-driven trades. Rebalancing is not about activity. It’s about discipline. When one segment runs too far ahead, trim. When another corrects despite intact fundamentals, add gradually. Over a full market cycle, asset allocation will contribute more to returns than stock picking brilliance. Structure protects you when emotions can’t.
