Bharti Airtel Limited Announces ₹20,000 Crore NBFC Expansion to Deepen Digital Lending Play
India’s telecom major **Bharti Airtel Limited** has unveiled ambitious plans to significantly scale its financial services business by capitalising its NBFC arm, **Airtel Money Limited**, with ₹20,000 crore over the next few years. The move signals Airtel’s aggressive entry into India’s rapidly expanding digital credit ecosystem.
Under the proposed structure, Airtel will infuse 70% of the capital, while promoter entity **Bharti Enterprises Limited** will contribute the remaining 30%. The initiative aims to build one of India’s largest and most trusted digital financial platforms, leveraging Airtel’s vast customer base and advanced data capabilities.
Over the past two years, Airtel has built a high-performance Lending Service Provider (LSP) platform, disbursing over ₹9,000 crore with strong delinquency metrics supported by disciplined underwriting and real-time risk monitoring. The company now plans to integrate its NBFC operations seamlessly with this digital credit engine, while maintaining operational segregation for regulatory clarity.
Airtel Money received its NBFC licence from the **Reserve Bank of India** on February 13, 2026. As per RBI guidelines, the regulator clarified that while the company holds a valid Certificate of Registration, it does not guarantee the financial soundness or repayment obligations of the NBFC.
With India’s formal credit-to-GDP ratio at 53%, as per CareEdge Ratings, Airtel sees a significant opportunity to bridge the credit gap and enhance financial inclusion. The expansion also represents a strategic diversification beyond telecom, positioning digital lending as a potential long-term growth engine.
