IRFC Extends ₹3,388.51 Crore Funding Support to PVUNL for Coal Block Development

📌 New Delhi, 27 September 2025 – Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC), the dedicated financing arm of the Ministry of Railways, has announced loan assistance of ₹3,388.51 crore to Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL), a subsidiary of NTPC Limited. The funding will be used for the development of the Banhardih Coal Block in Latehar district, Jharkhand. The agreement was signed in Patratu by Shri Shwet Ketu Mishra, Chief General Manager, IRFC, and Shri Ashok Kumar Sehgal, CEO of PVUNL. PVUNL, a joint venture between NTPC (74%) and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (26%), is executing a 4,000 MW thermal power project at Patratu. The Banhardih coal block, with an estimated reserve of 956 million tonnes, will supply fuel to this project. Coal will be transported via the Indian Railways network, reinforcing the strong forward and backward linkages with the railway sector. Recently accorded Navratna status, IRFC is expanding its role as a diversified infrastructure financier within the railway ecosystem, covering allied areas such as power generation, mining, transmission, warehousing, metro rail, freight corridors, and logistics. Notably, IRFC maintains a zero-NPA track record, highlighting its strong asset quality. Commenting on the development, the CMD of IRFC stated: “This loan marks IRFC’s continued commitment to support projects of national importance. Our financing will ensure timely development of the Banhardih Coal Block, fuel security for PVUNL’s power project, and enhanced rail-linked infrastructure under India’s growth plans.” With this move, IRFC further strengthens its position as a key financier of projects that are strategically aligned with India’s railway-linked and infrastructure development priorities. ✅ Disclaimer: This update is for informational purposes only and not investment advice. 🔔 Follow me for more financial updates and corporate developments.
