Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a global IT services giant and part of the revered Tata Group, is widely recognized for its software services, consulting, and business solutions, but beneath its surface lies a treasure trove of lesser-known facts that illuminate the company’s immense depth, legacy, and influence. While TCS is known to most as India’s largest IT services company by revenue and market cap, not many are aware that it played a key role in building India's software export ecosystem before it was even recognized as an industry. Founded in 1968 by the visionary F. C. Kohli—often called the father of the Indian IT industry—TCS started as a division of Tata Sons Limited. Long before the term "IT outsourcing" was coined, TCS was already pioneering remote services, handling punch card services and providing software support for clients in the UK and USA as early as the 1970s. Interestingly, one of its first international clients was the now-defunct Burroughs Corporation, for which TCS developed an operating system. This project laid the foundation for India's prominence in offshore software development
