ONGC Strikes Gas in Mahanadi Offshore Basin

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (ONGC) has made a natural gas discovery in the Mahanadi Offshore Basin, around 43 km off the Konark coast of Odisha. The discovery was made on September 18, 2026, at the MN-DW18-1-H-D well, the first well drilled by ONGC in the basin under the Samudra Manthan deepwater exploration programme. The well was drilled to a target depth of 1,623 metres and encountered gas between approximately 1,441 and 1,452 metres. ONGC said the well has been flowing gas with encouraging flow rates and reservoir pressure. The discovery is located relatively close to the Odisha coastline, which could potentially support quicker development if further appraisal establishes that the discovery is commercially viable. ONGC has indicated that the discovery, along with other finds in the area, could potentially be developed using shared infrastructure under the Petroleum and Natural Gas Rules, 2025. The well was spudded on July 25, 2026, using the drillship Platinum Explorer. The current discovery is part of ONGC's broader push into deepwater and ultra-deepwater exploration to expand India's domestic hydrocarbon resource base. Further appraisal work will be required to determine the size of the recoverable resource and the commercial potential of the discovery. ONGC has not yet disclosed estimated reserves or a production timeline. My View: In my view, the discovery is an important exploration milestone for ONGC and adds potential to its domestic gas portfolio. However, the actual financial impact will depend on subsequent appraisal, recoverable reserves and commercial development.
