Petronet LNG Plans ₹1,200 Crore CBG Expansion

PETRONET
Petronet LNG Ltd. has approved a proposal to incorporate a 50:50 joint venture with Gruner Renewable Energy Private Limited to establish 10 Compressed Biogas (CBG) plants across India. The proposed plants will each have a capacity of 18 metric tonnes per day, resulting in an aggregate planned capacity of 180 MT per day across the 10 facilities. The estimated total capital outlay for the project is ₹1,200 crore. The proposed joint venture will be incorporated as a private limited company. Further details regarding the incorporation and execution of the projects are expected to be disclosed by the company through subsequent regulatory filings. My View: In my view, this is a notable diversification for Petronet LNG beyond its core LNG business. The entry into CBG gives the company exposure to the renewable and alternative-fuel segment, while the 50:50 structure with Gruner Renewable Energy allows the investment and execution responsibilities to be shared between the partners. However, the project is still at the approval/proposal stage, so the actual contribution to revenue and earnings will depend on project execution, commissioning timelines, utilisation levels and returns generated by the new plants. Investors should therefore track subsequent disclosures for project locations, funding arrangements and implementation progress.
