Oil Refining

Chennai Petroleum Corporation

CHENNPETRO
was one of the strongest performers on 19 August, gaining more than 5% intraday and touching an all-time high of about ₹1,487.50. The move coincided with sharply higher global refining margins. This demonstrates an important commodity-cycle lesson: refinery profitability depends heavily on crack spreads and product prices, not simply on the price of crude oil. Investors should therefore track gross refining margins, crude sourcing, product mix, inventory gains/losses and capital expenditure before interpreting a refinery stock's rally.
