Big Risk Lesson from AI and Commodity Finance

Imagine two businessmen. The first borrows billions to buy expensive machines, expecting customers to pay him enough to cover his loans. The second lends money to a trader who promises to repay him after selling iron ore. Both believe they have a profitable business. But what happens when interest payments become too heavy, machines lose value, or the documents supporting a deal turn out to be questionable? This is the risk investors are watching in two separate cases. AI computing company CoreWeave reported $128 million in adjusted operating profit against $640 million in net interest expenses in the April–June 2026 quarter, while its debt stood at around $35 billion at the end of June. Separately, Jefferies alleged fraud in commodity-financing deals worth nearly $900 million. Those allegations have not been proven. What does this mean for India? India's digital infrastructure expansion creates opportunities for companies involved in building data centres and supporting infrastructure. Larsen & Toubro (L&T)

is one Nifty 500 company investors can study to understand this theme. However, potential industry demand does not guarantee company profits or stock returns. The real lesson is simple: a business may look impressive from the outside, but investors must look deeper. Who is paying the interest? Is cash actually coming in? Are the assets retaining their value? Can the company repay its debt without constantly borrowing more? In the stock market, exciting stories attract attention, but cash flow, debt quality and trustworthy transactions help reveal the real financial picture. Before evaluating a business, examine cash flows, borrowing costs, asset values, transaction credibility and repayment capacity rather than relying on growth stories.
