Connected Cars Go Mainstream: How Digital Features Are Reshaping Auto Demand

India’s new car buyers are increasingly treating digital connectivity and safety features as essentials, not add-ons. Connected cars—offering capabilities such as remote alerts, vehicle tracking, geofencing, diagnostics, and app-based controls—now account for over 27% of new vehicle sales. What was once a premium novelty is fast becoming social currency, especially among younger buyers. This shift is being driven by three forces. First, demographics: younger consumers expect cars to function like smartphones on wheels, with seamless apps and real-time data. Second, infrastructure improvements—better mobile networks and navigation—have made connected features more usable and reliable. Third, safety consciousness has risen, with buyers valuing alerts, theft protection, and driver-assist tools as markers of responsibility and status. In response, automakers are democratising connectivity, embedding these features across mass-market and mid-segment models rather than reserving them for top trims. Over time, connected platforms also open new revenue streams through subscriptions, data services, insurance tie-ups, and predictive maintenance—shifting the auto business from one-time sales toward lifecycle monetisation. For the sector, this trend favours companies with strong software integration, electronics sourcing, and partnerships with tech providers. It also lifts demand for sensors, telematics modules, and embedded systems across the supply chain. Indian Stocks That May Be Impacted Automakers leading connectivity adoption:

TMCV
rs – Strong push on connected features across EVs and ICE models.
M&M
a & Mahindra – SUV-led portfolio with expanding digital platforms.
MARUTI
ki – Rolling out connected tech across high-volume models.
