Dixon Technologies & HKC JV: Why Local Display Manufacturing Matters for India

A few years ago, most electronic components used in India’s smartphones, TVs, and laptops were imported. Companies assembled the final product, but the key parts came from outside the country. Recently, Dixon Technologies received government approval for a joint venture with HKC Overseas to manufacture display modules in India. These include LCD and TFT-LCD modules, which are essential components used in smartphones, televisions, and laptops. Why is this important? Display modules are one of the most expensive parts of electronic devices. When companies manufacture them locally instead of importing them, they reduce costs, shorten supply chains, and improve margins. For Dixon, this could mean moving up the value chain — from only assembling electronics to producing core components. Over time, that shift can strengthen profitability and competitiveness. For India, the impact is broader. Local manufacturing supports the government’s push toward electronics self-reliance and strengthens the domestic supply chain. If display manufacturing grows domestically, several companies in the Nifty 500 electronics and EMS ecosystem may indirectly benefit from higher production activity and component localization.
