Floating Solar: India’s Next Renewable Opportunity?
India is now looking beyond land. The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy has started discussions with states on a draft floating solar policy. The goal is simple — use lakes, reservoirs, and dams to generate solar power.
Today, India has only around 700 MW of floating solar installed. The main issues were unclear regulations and lack of proper site data. The new roadmap aims to simplify approvals, reduce land pressure, and give developers better clarity.
Floating solar panels sit on water surfaces. They reduce evaporation, improve panel efficiency due to cooling, and avoid land acquisition problems. For a country facing land constraints and rising power demand, this could be a practical solution.
As infrastructure expands, several listed companies from the Nifty 500 ecosystem may participate in project development, EPC execution, module supply, or power generation.
