From Crude Oil to Your Kitchen: Why One Barrel Powers Half the World
When headlines talk about LPG shortages, rising naphtha prices, or crude oil crossing $120, it can feel like unrelated news. In reality, they are all chapters of the same story.
Crude oil begins its journey millions of years ago. Tiny marine organisms settled at the ocean floor, buried under layers of rock and heat. Over time, they transformed into crude oil — a thick mixture of hydrocarbons trapped deep underground.
But crude oil itself is not directly useful. Refineries must separate it using a process called fractional distillation. Think of it like a tall tower where heat sorts molecules by weight.
At the top, the lightest molecules become LPG, the gas used in household cylinders.
Next comes naphtha, the backbone of plastics, chemicals, fertilizers, and synthetic materials.
Then comes petrol, used by most passenger cars.
Below that is kerosene, which powers aircraft.
Next is diesel, the lifeline of trucks, buses, and freight movement.
At the bottom lie fuel oil and bitumen, used in shipping and road construction.
So the next time crude oil prices spike, it doesn't only affect petrol pumps. It influences plastics, fertilizers, cooking gas, airline fuel, transport costs, and even the roads we drive on.
India’s challenge is unique. The country imports over 80% of its crude oil, yet has built one of the world's largest refining systems. Refineries process imported crude and even export fuels globally.
This means global oil disruptions — like shipping blockages or geopolitical tensions — ripple through India’s economy quickly.
Because when crude oil moves, entire supply chains move with it.
