From Stone to Gas: India’s Coal Gasification Gamble

For decades, India’s growth ran on coal — black, bulky, and dirty. But now, the government wants to change its very form. 🔥
Welcome to coal gasification — a process that turns solid coal into syngas, a blend of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Imagine converting a rock into a clean-burning gas that can power factories, make fertilisers, or even produce methanol and synthetic diesel.
So why this sudden push? Because 40% of India’s coal can’t be mined conventionally. It’s trapped deep underground — unreachable, but not unusable. With underground gasification, the government plans to burn coal where it lies and extract gas directly through wells.
To make this happen, India launched the National Coal Gasification Mission, targeting ₹4 lakh crore in investments by 2030. The mission aims to gasify 100 million tonnes of coal annually — enough to reduce costly imports of methanol, urea, and ammonia. The government has also offered ₹8,500 crore in incentives, faster clearances, and even waived environmental approvals for pilot projects.
But innovation carries risk. Without strict oversight, underground fires can contaminate groundwater or collapse land. Other nations, like Australia, have banned similar projects after facing such issues. Still, India is trying to strike a balance — with monitoring systems and pilot-based feasibility checks.
