If Coal Supply Is Strong, Why Are Power Plant Stocks Falling

Imagine a power plant preparing to generate electricity, only to find its coal inventory running dangerously low. Now imagine the coal supplier saying it has already delivered more than its contractual commitment. This is the supply-side puzzle facing India's power sector. Coal India reportedly supplied 97 million tonnes of coal to NTPC and its joint ventures in H1 FY27, exceeding contractual commitments. Yet, NTPC's coal stocks have reportedly declined sharply, with several plants facing critically low inventories. What does this mean for the market? The key lesson is that coal production and dispatch figures do not tell the entire story. Transportation bottlenecks, plant-level consumption, inventory management and delivery schedules can all influence the availability of coal at power stations. Coal India Ltd.

Coal India is directly linked to domestic coal production and supply. Consistent dispatches may support its operating performance, but investors should also examine production costs, e-auction prices, payment collections and demand trends. Strong reported supply alone does not guarantee higher profits or a rising share price. What should investors track? Coal dispatches versus actual power-plant consumption. NTPC's plant-wise coal inventory levels. Railway logistics and delivery constraints. Coal India's production, realisations and profitability. Coal supply, transportation, inventory levels and actual consumption must be analysed together to understand electricity generation risks and energy-sector business performance.
