India–Afghanistan Trade Reset: A New Corridor, A New Calculus
When the Taliban’s trade minister landed in Delhi with a business delegation, it signalled a quiet but significant shift. Afghanistan, caught between border clashes and choking dependence on Pakistani ports, is searching for a more reliable economic lifeline. India, with its long-term footprint in Afghan reconstruction, now sees an opening—one that runs not through Karachi but through the Chabahar corridor.
Chabahar has always been more than a port. It is a geopolitical alternative, a trade stabiliser, and a strategic doorway for India into Central Asia. As Afghan commerce looks to redirect its fruit, dry fruit, carpets, and mineral exports, Delhi becomes a natural anchor. Indian buyers gain better access, Afghan exporters gain predictability, and regional routes gain relevance.
But the deeper story lies in logistics. Every container rerouted from Pakistan to Chabahar strengthens India’s role in regional connectivity. Every investment discussion—from Indian cold-chain storage to processing units—adds momentum. And every handshake in Delhi subtly shifts the balance of trade influence in South Asia.
If this corridor expands, rail-linked freight, port utilisation, warehousing, and cross-border agri-trade could see gradual improvements over the next few years. It is a reminder that geopolitics is not only fought in borders—it is shaped in supply chains.
