India Banking 2026: Clean Books, Hidden Stress & the Real Game Ahead

Indian banks look spotless today. Gross NPAs are near 2.2%, a level once unthinkable. On the surface, it feels like the bad-loan era is behind us. But clean balance sheets don’t always mean clean behaviour. A big part of this cleanup came from write-offs and asset sales, not just better repayments. In FY25 alone, banks wrote off more loans than they actually recovered. Stress didn’t vanish — it was pushed out faster. At the same time, credit is growing faster than deposits. Banks are lending aggressively, but savers are chasing better returns elsewhere. This creates a quiet squeeze: higher deposit rates → higher funding costs → pressure on margins. Then there’s the fintech and NBFC layer. Unsecured digital loans are booming, especially among young borrowers. Many take multiple small loans across apps. Defaults don’t stay isolated — banks fund, co-lend, or buy these loans. Risk travels. The RBI’s message is subtle but firm: Risk hasn’t disappeared. It has migrated — into partnerships, unsecured credit, and funding mismatches. 2026 isn’t about a banking crisis. It’s about whether growth stays disciplined — or whether today’s comfort becomes tomorrow’s stress. 🎯 20-WORD LEARNING TAKEAWAY Low NPAs don’t equal low risk. In banking, stress often shifts quietly before it shows up loudly. NBFCs (Credit Reach, Higher Risk–Reward) Bajaj Finance
