India’s 5G Ambitions: Fast Rollout, Slow Revolution?

5G built fast, value still loading India’s 5G rollout has been one of the fastest globally. As of 2024–25, 5G covers ~99.6% of districts, with 4.69 lakh base stations deployed and ~365 million subscribers already on 5G networks. On paper, this is a landmark achievement for Indian telecom . Yet for most users, 5G still feels like a slightly better 4G. Videos load faster, downloads finish quicker—but there’s no “killer app” yet that fundamentally changes daily life. Why 5G Feels Underwhelming (For Now) 🔹 Technology gap: NSA vs SA Most Indian operators rolled out Non-Standalone (NSA) 5G, which runs on a 4G core. This limits advanced 5G features like ultra-low latency and network slicing. Jio is the only operator with a full Standalone (SA) 5G core, enabling true 5G capabilities . 🔹 Infrastructure constraints Only ~45–46% of telecom towers are fiberised, restricting high-speed backhaul Cell density remains low for high-frequency 5G Edge data centres, crucial for real-time applications, are still nascent Without these, 5G’s full potential cannot be unlocked . 🔹 Missing consumer use-cases Unlike 3G (mobile internet) or 4G (video + app economy), 5G hasn’t yet created a must-have consumer application. This limits monetisation, making telcos cautious about heavy capital spending . Where 5G Does Matter: The Enterprise Angle Globally, 5G’s biggest impact is industrial, not consumer-led: Smart factories & automation Ports, logistics & mining (remote equipment control) Healthcare (tele-monitoring, imaging) Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) for homes In India, ~25% of 5G data usage already comes from FWA, and Jio is now the world’s largest FWA provider by subscribers . Indian Listed Stocks to Watch
