India’s Freight Rail Revolution: How Dedicated Freight Corridors Could Change Logistics

Dedicated Freight Corridors improve speed, capacity, and efficiency of rail logistics, helping India reduce transport costs and strengthen long-distance freight movement. In the 1950s, Indian Railways carried nearly 89% of the country’s freight. Today, that number has dropped to around 18%, while roads carry nearly 71%. Ironically, rail is still much cheaper. Moving goods by rail costs about ₹1.96 per tonne-km, almost half the cost of road transport. So why did rail lose its edge? The biggest reason was mixed traffic. Passenger and freight trains share the same tracks, and passenger trains always get priority. As a result, freight trains often wait in loops or yards for hours. In fact, the average speed of a goods train was just about 25 km/h, barely faster than city traffic. India’s answer to this long-standing problem is the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) project. Two major corridors are now almost fully operational: • Western DFC: Connecting Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Mumbai) to Dadri near Delhi, mainly for container traffic. • Eastern DFC: Connecting Ludhiana to Sonnagar, largely for coal and bulk commodities. Together they cover ~2,843 km, creating railway lines used only by freight trains. These corridors bring three big improvements: Higher axle load: Trains can carry heavier cargo, reducing cost per tonne. Higher speed: Freight trains can run up to 100 km/h, cutting travel time nearly in half. Modern signalling: Allows more trains to run safely on the same route. The impact is already visible. Freight trains on DFCs are moving at 46–55 km/h, almost double the speed of the old network. Another hidden benefit: when freight moves to DFCs, passenger lines get freed up, allowing more passenger trains and reducing congestion. Engineering & Rail Infrastructure • Larsen & Toubro
