India’s LPG Revolution: The Last-Mile Problem
India has done the hard part getting LPG connections into millions of poorer households.
Under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, more than 10.5 crore women have received LPG connections. But a connection does not automatically mean a household stops using firewood.
For many low-income families, the real problem begins when the cylinder becomes empty.
💰 Refill cost matters.
🌾 Income can be seasonal or unpredictable.
🚚 Delivery itself can add cost and effort.
🔥 Firewood can feel “free” if it is collected locally.
This creates fuel stacking LPG is used for some meals, while the traditional chulha remains active for others.
CEEW surveys found that nearly 75% of rural households surveyed had used LPG recently, but fewer than one-fourth cooked exclusively with LPG. Around half still relied mainly on firewood.
The bigger lesson is simple:
India’s clean-cooking challenge is no longer just about connecting households to LPG. It is about making regular LPG usage affordable and convenient.
And that creates an interesting market angle.
