Mart is the steady compounder. Strong store economics, rising profitability, and consistent same-store growth have pushed revenues near ₹3,000 crore. Their model now thrives on disciplined expansion supported by efficient supply chains and sharper merchandise planning. V-Mart

is in recovery mode. Revenues grew, same-store sales improved, but profitability remains thin once lease accounting is stripped out. Still, the business seems to be stabilising, helped by cluster-based expansion and tighter cost management. V2 Retail delivered the quarter’s breakout. Revenues jumped ~86%, fuelled by aggressive store additions and healthy margin performance. Their strategy—opening in underserved markets and becoming the fastest-paying buyer for vendors—is helping them climb rapidly. Across the sector, two themes stand out: 1. Festivals reshape the numbers. Earlier-than-usual festivities pulled demand forward into September. Consumers spent—but chose lighter, more affordable fashion instead of winterwear. Value shoppers remain sensitive, but still look for trendier, better-quality products. 2. Competition from giants is rising. Zudio, Reliance’s Yousta, and online platforms like Meesho are reshaping expectations. To stay relevant, value retailers are balancing price with quality, widening assortments, improving vendor relationships, and experimenting with quicker delivery models. Ultimately, this sector is fighting for India’s new consuming class—millions just beginning to spend beyond essentials. They may buy rarely, but when they do, they want value and aspiration. That customer base is expanding, and whoever understands them best will lead the next retail cycle.
