India Slows Renewable Tenders to Strengthen the Grid: A Necessary Pause for Sustainable Growth
India is slowing renewable tenders to fix grid absorption limits, ensuring long-term stability while staying on track for 500 GW by 2030.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) will temporarily slow renewable energy auctions in FY26–27. The core reason: solar and wind capacity is rising faster than the grid can absorb, leading to surplus power at peak hours and connectivity constraints.
Why the Slowdown Is Happening
Generation > Absorption: Daytime solar output often exceeds grid capacity.
Connectivity Gaps: Several projects face delays in transmission readiness.
Unviable Bids: Ultra-low tariffs are becoming unsustainable.
Curtailment Risk: Developers face financial stress when power cannot be evacuated.
To avoid stranded assets and improve financial viability, MNRE will cut back on auctions and cancel unviable projects.
