At World Economic Forum in Davos, India’s AI ambition was stated clearly and confidently.
Ashwini Vaishnaw disagreed with doubts around India’s AI standing, asserting that India belongs to the first tier of AI powers.
His reasoning was a five-pillar AI stack: applications, models, chips, infrastructure, and energy. India, he said, is progressing across all five—and could dominate the application layer globally.
The claim is bold. The reality is mixed.
On chips, India is still at a nascent stage, relying heavily on foreign technology despite new fabs being announced. On models and infrastructure, India lacks frontier-grade large language models and hyperscale compute capacity. These gaps alone keep India out of the global AI top tier—for now.
But two pillars deserve attention.
First, energy. India’s rapid renewable adoption provides a long-term advantage, as AI is power-hungry and energy security will define winners. Second, applications. Indian IT may be slow to transform, but its global service footprint remains unmatched—and AI services could be its next chapter.
Beyond AI, Davos wasn’t empty talk. States like Telangana and Uttar Pradesh converted meetings into MoUs, attracting global capital even as geopolitical trust frayed.
The irony of Davos remains. Speeches by leaders like Donald Trump, Emmanuel Macron, and Mark Carney questioned global harmony—yet deals were signed, interests were served.
At the world’s most elite gathering, cooperation survived, but only where incentives aligned.
