ITC Business But Cigarette Tax Pressure Creates Challenge

Imagine a company performing well in multiple businesses, but one major segment starts putting pressure on its overall earnings. That's the situation with

ITC
. In Q2 FY27, ITC delivered better-than-expected results, supported by its FMCG, agriculture and paperboards businesses. However, its cigarette business continued to face challenges following a sharp increase in taxation. Cigarette volumes declined 7–8% year-on-year. Cigarette segment revenue dropped 21%. Cigarette EBIT declined 27%. Higher taxes created pressure on profitability. Analysts believe calibrated price increases and portfolio changes could support a gradual earnings recovery by Q4 FY27. ITC's FMCG, agriculture and paperboards businesses showed strength. If cigarette profitability improves and other businesses maintain their growth momentum, the company could see better overall earnings performance. However, recovery is not guaranteed. Investors should monitor taxation, cigarette volumes, pricing decisions and future earnings. Strong business performance does not guarantee consistent growth; investors must evaluate segment performance, taxation, profitability, valuation and future business risks.
