My Mother, the Original Portfolio Manager — A Financial Tribute on Mother’s Day

#MothersDay2025 Before I learned what a 5-year CAGR was, I saw my mother build a future with ₹10 coins in a pickle jar. She didn’t own stocks, but she intuitively knew compounding. In the late 1990s, she invested ₹500/month into a post office RD for 5 years. At 9% interest, it became ₹38,000 — and she used it for my school fees. That’s goal-based investing with fixed income. Later, she bought 10 grams of gold at ₹4,000. Today, that gold is worth ₹72,000 — a CAGR of 11.3% over 20+ years. In 2010, I introduced her to mutual funds. She hesitated. “Stock market is risky,” she said. I showed her SIPs. We started with ₹1,000/month in a large-cap fund. She stuck with it, through elections, demonetization, and COVID. 15 years later, that ₹1,000 SIP has become ₹5.6 lakhs at ~12% CAGR. She still doesn’t know the NAV. But she understands the concept: 🔍 Research Analyst’s Perspective: Here’s what our mothers instinctively teach us about investing: Asset Allocation: She diversified between cash, gold, LIC, chit funds, and land. Liquidity Planning: Emergency cash always existed — even when income didn’t. Inflation Awareness: She tracked milk, petrol, and rice prices like an economist. Risk Management: She never overexposed. Her gold purchases were staggered, like a SIP. Delayed Gratification: That fridge, that family trip, that jewellery set — all were saved for, not swiped for. ✅ What You Can Do (Financial Learning Only): Gift her a SIP in a hybrid or balanced advantage fund Review her health and term insurance Start a Will or financial document folder in her name Teach her how digital gold or FD apps work Ask her for one money tip — you’ll learn more than any finance course Mothers invest with love. We must return it with literacy. 💡Learning Takeaway: Our mothers practice the foundations of investing daily: discipline, diversification, delayed gratification — the same traits that build generational wealth.
