Pedal to the Metal: India’s Auto Ancillaries at a Turning Point

For years, India’s auto ancillaries lived in the shadows thin margins, tough timelines, and endless capex. Then the world changed. Global OEMs, shaken by supply-chain shocks and China risk, began searching for a second engine. India stepped in. Exports surged. Kit values expanded. Indian suppliers stopped being just “cheaper alternatives” and started becoming partners with design, IP, and global relevance. A headlamp was no longer a bulb it became an intelligent LED system. A plastic assembler turned into a cockpit designer. Gears evolved into e-axles. But every acceleration comes with a sharp turn ahead. Electric Vehicles are rewriting the rules. EVs need fewer mechanical parts and far more electronics. This threatens legacy ICE-heavy suppliers, while opening doors for those who adapt fast. Some are pivoting to EV drivetrains. Others are hedging—across EV and ICE, passenger and commercial vehicles, India and exports. A few are even moving forward, becoming EV makers themselves. The industry today is not about one big bet. It’s about balance—between old cash flows and new technology, between cost advantage and innovation. The winners won’t be the biggest, but the most adaptable. India’s auto ancillaries are shifting from low-cost suppliers to global, EV-ready innovators but adaptability will decide long-term winners . Samvardhana Motherson International
