⚖️ SEBI, Algorithms & The Future of Trading in India
Not long ago, SEBI made headlines by temporarily banning Jane Street, a U.S.-based firm, for alleged index manipulation. Just weeks later, SEBI has gone further — proposing that algorithmic trading and proprietary trading be formally brought under its master regulations.
Alongside this, SEBI also wants to scrap the outdated “small investor” definition. Why? Because data speaks louder than definitions:
👉 In FY24, 91% of retail traders lost ₹52,400 crore in derivatives.
This shows how retail enthusiasm in complex instruments often translates into concentrated risks.
So what does this mean for India’s markets?
🔹 Transparency & Oversight – Algo and prop trading will now fall under the same regulatory umbrella as mutual funds, brokers, and exchanges. This should reduce chances of opaque strategies hurting ordinary investors.
🔹 Market Structure Shift – Greater scrutiny could rebalance the playing field between retail investors and large institutional algo players.
🔹 Investor Protection – Removing “small investor” from regulation isn’t about exclusion, but about making rules that reflect actual risk, not outdated thresholds.
