📈 Silver: The Multi-Utility Metal of the Decade ⚡
Back in 2011, silver was all the rage, hitting ₹76,000/kg. But a crash followed, and many investors turned their backs. Fast forward to 2024, silver is back, and it's no longer just a jewelry metal.
A friend of mine, Ankit, works on solar parks in Gujarat. He told me, "We can't build a single panel without silver." Why? Because silver is the best conductor of electricity. As India adds 20+ GW of solar capacity in FY24, and the government targets 500 GW by 2030, demand for silver is expected to grow. In fact, silver used in solar panels grew 158% globally in the last five years, and it’s expected to increase by another 20% in 2024 alone.
Industrial demand for silver is expected to exceed 700 million ounces in 2024, valued at approximately ₹4.9 lakh crore, which is driving its surge in value.
⛏️ But There’s a Catch: Supply Isn’t Keeping Up
Silver mining has been struggling to match demand. Since 2014, silver production has been stagnating, and in 2024, it’s expected to fall by 1%. With silver inventories on major exchanges halving, the supply crunch is real.
🛡️ Silver = Poor Man’s Gold?
At ₹90,000/kg, silver is still cheaper than gold, which is priced around ₹74,000/10g. The gold-to-silver ratio is historically around 70:1, and if this ratio corrects, silver could reach ₹1,12,000/kg — a potential 24% upside from current levels.
The total investable silver market globally is just ₹6.2 lakh crore — small compared to gold's ₹296 lakh crore. Even small buying waves can spark significant rallies in the silver market.
